In January, 2014, Carl Chaney, a teacher at Cary High (CHS), went to South Sudan to conduct workshops focused on teacher development. Upon his return, he shared information about his trip to South Sudan with several other CHS teachers. They decided to reach out to students to gauge interest in starting an organization that would help improve access to quality education in South Sudan. The response was overwhelming! Students and staff at CHS quickly mobilized to spread awareness and raise funds. Mr. Chaney continues to make trips to South Sudan to train teachers and S4SS continues to provide support for high-quality education in the world’s newest nation.
