Mr. Chaney returned to South Sudan in June 2015 to survey new schools, collect administrative data, and conduct a needs assessment of ten different schools with which CHS partners. S4SS has a new goal for the upcoming school year called the “Teacher Scholarship Initiative.” After hearing from the school leaders in-country, it is clear that teachers need extensive training and development in their profession if their schools are going to prosper. These educators grew up during Sudan’s civil war, so did not have the opportunity to complete their higher education. There is a teacher training facility in Kajo Keji, South Sudan where teachers can earn certifications. The cost to support one teacher for three years is $490. S4SS has set a goal of $20,000 to help support 40 teachers earn certifications as educators.
